How to Get Your Website into the Alexa Top 100000
Getting into the Alexa top 100,000 list of websites is not easy. You need to have steady traffic. Daily. Here is how I did it:
Promote, promote, promote
Every website says this but it is true. If you don't promote your site, no one will promote it for you. Not for free, anyways! Of course, there is a line between promotion and spam. Spamming is bad and probably won't help. The best way to get a steady stream of traffic is through link exchanges. Find similar websites with a similar Alexa rank or Page rank and email the person who runs the site. At worst, no response. At best, more traffic.
Update often
This is especially true if you have a blog. No one is going to go back to a blog when the last update was in 2008.
If you have a blog, write about all sorts of things
If you write about one topic, you will rank in Google for one topic. Write about many different topics and you could get a ton of traffic. Look at eHow. About.com. The list goes on and on.
Directories
I know directories seem like a 1990s sort of thing but they are still around. Some have really high Alexa ranks and pageranks as well. Some directory sites even require people to pay to have a site listed so try to find free ones. This could potentially be another steady steam of traffic.

Don't comment on blogs
Sure, commenting on blogs will get you a couple visits here or there but it won't last. The post will become old and people will stop reading the comments.
Don't expect Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook, or Tumblr to bring steady traffic
What happens to something after it stops being viral? It stops being viral. Again, getting traffic from social networks is like getting traffic from commenting on blogs. It doesn't last.
If you can't win, don't compete
Imagine the top ten results for the search term "flowers" in Google. How difficult would it be to rank in the top 10 for that search term? Nearly impossible. If you can't rank for a search term, don't write about it.
