Reddit and Digg

Reddit is better than Digg for a number of reasons. They are both really old sites. They both do essentially the same thing. Reddit's Alexa rank is 125 while Digg's is 191. Overall, posts on Reddit have more comments than Digg. Comments on Reddit usually number in the hundreds and sometimes thousands while there isn't a single post on Digg's front page that has over 100 comments.
Digg used to be the leader. What happened? I don't have any inside knowledge but I think Digg moved to second place for the following reasons
1. Users got bored and left 2. Users got older and left 3. Users went to Reddit and stopped using Digg
I will go through these one by one.
Bored If you go to the same website day after day and your entertainment value starts to decline, you will stop going to that site. People weren't as entertained so they went elsewhere. Maybe they liked the puns on Reddit.
Older Facebook did it right and Digg did it wrong. Facebook knew that people graduate from college and needed to keep those users around. What did they do? They deemphasized Facebook as a college only site by opening it up to everyone. Sure, Digg isn't a college only site but they didn't do anything to keep veteran users around. The older users of Digg probably saw the stupid comments on posts and thought "what am i doing here?" and stopped visiting Digg.
Reddit Reddit is entertaining. No question. Hilarious pictures and comments. I go there every day and laugh at least once. Digg isn't like that. Again, Reddit entertains while Digg does not.
